What are Hazard Communication Labels?

Hazard Communication (HazCom) labels are required by OSHA under the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to provide necessary information about hazardous chemicals. These labels appear on chemical containers and convey important details to workers, helping them identify and handle chemicals safely. Proper labeling helps keep hazards clearly communicated, reducing the risk of workplace injuries and exposures.

Components of a Hazard Communication Label

Each OSHA-compliant chemical label must include the following components:

Product Identifier

The chemical name or code used to identify the substance. It must match the name listed in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for consistency.

Signal Word

Either “Danger” (for severe hazards) or “Warning” (for less severe hazards). This helps workers quickly understand the level of risk.

Pictograms

Standardized symbols within a red-bordered diamond that represent specific hazards, such as toxicity, flammability, or corrosiveness. OSHA uses eight pictograms as part of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), while GHS uses nine. The environmental pictogram is not mandatory but may be used to provide additional information.

Hazard Statements

Brief descriptions of the nature and severity of the hazard (For example: 'Causes severe skin burns and eye damage' or 'Highly flammable liquid and vapor'). These statements provide clear warnings about potential health or physical risks.

Precautionary Statements

Instructions for safe handling, storage, disposal, and emergency response. This section includes preventive measures such as wearing protective equipment, proper storage conditions, and first-aid responses in case of exposure.

Supplier Information

The name, address, and phone number of the manufacturer or distributor. This information allows users to contact the supplier for further details if needed.

Importance of Hazard Communication Labels

Proper labeling is important for workplace safety. It helps workers:

Employer Responsibilities

Employers are responsible for ensuring that all hazardous chemicals in the workplace are properly labeled. They must also train employees on how to read and understand these labels, along with the corresponding Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Training should cover all elements of a label, including pictograms, hazard statements, and precautionary measures.

Employers should implement a system to maintain and update labels as needed. If a new hazard is identified, labels must be revised accordingly. Regular inspections should be conducted to confirm that all chemical containers remain properly labeled and that workers are following safety protocols.

Conclusion

Hazard communication labels are a key part of workplace safety. Understanding their components and purpose helps workers handle chemicals safely and reduces risks. Following OSHA’s HazCom labeling requirements creates a safer work environment for everyone. Employers must prioritize proper labeling, training, and hazard awareness to maintain workplace safety and meet regulatory requirements.
